Frequently Asked Questions
Q. "What is the purpose of a quick test or EZ test drain?"
A. Quick test (A.K.A. EZ Test) shower drains are threaded to allow for a test nipple and cap to be inserted from the top of the drain for leak testing or the installer can use an inflatable test ball.
Q. "What is a collector or shower pan?"
A. This is the horizontal surface located at the bottom of the shower. The collector typically consists of a non-slip surface slightly banked towards the center or wherever the drain is located. Combined with three to four inch walls around the side, the goal of your shower drainage plumbing is to get the water to flow to and down the drain.
Q. "Why are some of these listed as No Caulk drains? Don't they need caulking to seal to the shower base?"
A. The are called No Caulk drains because they will fit over drain piping and are sealed by an internal compression ring. Before modern plumbing technology came along, drains would have had to be caulked with lead and oakum to seal the drain to the pipe. Since the lead and oakum process has been eliminated they are referred to as no caulk. You will still need to use some type of caulking to seal the flange of the shower drain to the shower pan.
Q. "How can I prevent my weep holes from clogging during installation?"
A. Before the final mortar application place some pea gravel over the weep holes so the mortar doesn't completely cover them.
Q. "What is a PVD finish?"
A. A PVD finish is designed to not corrode, tarnish, or discolor. It is developed by embedding molecules deep into the surface, creating a bond that is nearly indestructible. This process is known as Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD).
Please note: While we strive to ensure every product we label as "Made in the USA" really is 100% made in the USA, it is also important to understand that sometimes manufacturers make changes to their products, or for various reasons may receive components or materials that they would normally purchase domestically from an overseas supplier - and they don't necessarily let distributors (like us!) know that they've changed something about the product or where it is manufactured.
If you receive a product that PlumbingSupply.com® says is "Made in the USA" and the product states it was manufactured elsewhere, please contact us. We will happily replace or refund your purchase to your satisfaction.
