"What does thermostatic mean?"
The main purpose of thermostatically controlled faucets is to keep the outlet temperature constant. All of these fancy tub/shower faucets include a thermostatic control which senses fluctuations in temperature and compensates for those changes by adjusting the hot or cold water supply. For example, if someone flushes a toilet these faucets will sense the rise in temperature (due to less incoming cold water) and compensate by dropping the intake of hot water to help prevent scalding. When the toilet is done flushing and the amount of cold water increases, these faucets will readjust by adding more hot water to keep the temperature constant.
