The cartridge is engineered to last for at least 7000 uses and to receive waste through drain holes. Waste passes through a layer of sealant, continues through a siphon trap system, and flows out through a patented baffle to prevent the loss of sealant. A discharge tube in the housing directs the flow of waste into the building drain system. The cartridge is designed as a replaceable component when its function has been exhausted.

Q. "Because there is no water flowing through the drain line, is there a chance that uric acid and/or sodium can crystallize and adhere to the inside of the drain system?"
A. Yes, with the absence of water in the drain lines urine will dry out. Even though urine is mostly water (95% or so) it does contain a number of inorganic salts, organic compounds, including uric acid. This build-up of salts and compounds will require that the drain lines be regularly snaked and cleared. Also, uric acid and other compounds will cause metal pipe to corrode. If this is a concern, then please checkout these water saving pint-flush urinals. They are eco-friendly, yet provide the performance of similar .5 gallon per flush urinals.
