  • More detailed information about Magna pumps
The Grundfos MAGNA circulator pumps were created for the circulation of liquid in heating systems or domestic hot water systems. No need to worry about complicated pump settings. Install the pump and leave it on the factory AUTOADAPT® setting. The electronic pump control will automatically adjust the pump speed when the system demand and flow rates change. This is all made possible by the patented AUTOADAPT® feature, the brains behind the pump. It analyzes your system, learns what works best for your heating application and changes the settings of the pump as needed to optimize your system.

Detailed Magna Pump Information
Let's say your thermostat has been set at 70° and your living room has reached that temperature. The thermostat sends a signal to the zone valve that tells the zone valve to close the water flow to that room. However, there are still other zone valves open because the temperature in the back bedrooms have not reached their temperature setting. The pump is still running the other zones in your house but since the living room zone valve has been closed the pressure now increases on the rest of the system. The Magna pump detects the change in the electrical amperage to the now closed zone valve and automatically compensates and slows the pump speed down, reducing the load on the motor and thereby reducing your energy consumption. This is all done, automatically, for every zone valve on your system! The AUTOADAPT® feature even keeps a record of your normal usage pattern and will automatically adjust to keep your entire heating system working as efficiently as possible while keeping the comfort level of your living space exactly where you want it to be.

These Magna pumps are commonly used in hotels, schools, hospitals, apartment buildings or other facilities that use hydronic fan coils to heat many separate rooms. They are also a brilliant choice for new construction installation in large homes or for existing heating systems that need quick pump reaction to flow rate demand changes. The pump will automatically react and adjust to flow rate changes and increase or decrease head pressure without the need to use expensive bypass valves. These pumps can immediately adapt to operate at the maximum pump curve as needed.

The Magna has an operating panel that shows the pump's basic essential performance features clearly indicating flow rate and operating level of the pump compared to its maximum capacity. The pump performance can also be manually adjusted instantly with one press of a button. An automatic night time duty can be selected by pushing the mode button on the control panel. This feature will allow the pump to change automatically between normal duty and night time duty when an integrated temperature sensor registers a supply pipe drop in temperature of more than 18°F. to 27°F. within approximately 2 hours. The changeover back to normal duty happens without a time lag when the temperature increases by approximately 18°F.

The MAGNA variable-speed wet rotor circulator is reliable, intelligent and powerful, yet energy efficient. Wet rotor circulators are designed to be water cooled and at the same time lubricate the shaft and bearings as the pumped water surrounds and moves past the rotor. Since the magnets are positioned in the rotor, no brushes are needed, like conventional motors. Permanent magnet motors can produce from 35% to 40% more power than conventional type motors, but at a lower electrical power consumption. How smart is that? All MAGNA pumps are classified as energy class "A."

Cast iron pumps are used for closed systems such as hydronic or radiant heating. Stainless steel pumps should be used for open systems since they are not effected by the introduction of oxygen (air) into the system. The Grundfos Magna pumps are offered in cast iron or stainless steel.

Now, here is where your thinking plays a part. It is important for you to choose a pump with a duty range that falls within the same range as the sizing of your system. The duty point is the point on the pump curve chart where the flow and head meet that matches the requirements needed for your circulating system application. We show the head pressure and corresponding GPM flow rate for both the proportional differential pressure and constant differential pressure on the pump curve charts.

The Magna pumps are designed to circulate water with hardness not greater than 17 grains per gallon or with a mixture of water containing not more than 50% glycol. If your water has a hardness rating of 17 or greater then a water softener would be needed to reduce your hardness level. Magna pumps must not be used to circulate or transfer flammable liquids such as gasoline, kerosene or diesel oil.

Grundfos MAGNA pumps can be used with the optional Grundfos R100 Remote Control or fitted with optional expansion modules so the pump can be monitored or controlled by an external controller with the use of signal transmitters. We offer more information regarding the expansion modules and the remote control below.

Expansion Modules for Magna Pumps
Grundfos MAGNA pumps can be fitted with optional expansion modules so the pump can be controlled by an external controller through signal transmitters.

The GENI module enables communication ports to be mounted on the pump and accessed through a digital RS-485 input that can be controlled from a 0-10 volt signal transmitter or by a personal computer. The pump can be started and stopped by the input of this external control and also allows the control of two pumps in parallel. This feature is used for building management purposes. The operation of the pump can then be controlled manually or programmed to turn on or off as the building management dictates.
Image of the Grundfos GENI and Lon Modules
GENI and Lon Modules
The Grundfos GENI module can also provide bus communication through GENIbus, allowing the pump to be connected to the Grundfos Pump Management System 2000.
The LonWORKS® module provides bus communication through the LON network. This enables connection to a network based on LonWorks® technology and other pumps that are based on this communication standard. In this way multiple pumps can be networked together and all operation controlled at one location. If your current system is using LonWORKS® technology then you will only need to purchase the Lon LonWORKS® module #605809.
The GENI module used by itself without one of the Fieldbus Communication Units allows external control to start and stop the pump but does not allow information the pump has to be transferred back to the transmitter or computer. For two-way communication with the pump one of the Fieldbus Communication Units must be purchased and used with the GENI module.

By using one of the Fieldbus Communication Units along with the GENI module, the user can set pump operating parameters such as temperature influence, desired temperature set point, choice of operating mode, and other options. At the same time the pump can send back important pump status information like the actual head pressure, actual flow, power input, fault or problem indicators and more. Any of the Fieldbus Communication Units can be used with the GENI module to adapt to that specific communication system.

R100 Remote Control for Magna Pumps
Grundfos MAGNA pumps can also be used with an infrared remote control for easy hand held access to pump performance data or diagnostic information. The R100 remote control provides wireless communication between the user and the pump. The user has the ability to read or change the settings of the Magna pump as needed.
Image of the Grundfos R100 Remote Control for Magna Series Pumps The R100 Remote Control lets you read pump operating data and fault indications and lets you set the control mode or head pressure you want. You can also select an external set point signal, or the digital input function you prefer. The R100 remote control will let you assign pump numbers to pumps that are being operated in parallel to distinguish between them so you will know which one you are communicating with.

This R100 Remote Control is used with the GENI module and allows on-site communication with the Magna pumps without the need to purchase a Fieldbus Communication Unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. "What is a closed system?"
A. A closed system is one in which you very rarely need to add fresh water into the system. Closed systems usually have air eliminators installed in the system to remove all air and bubbles from the system and the same water is circulated through the system. Constantly adding fresh water to a closed system will cause air (oxygen) to enter into the system and the oxygen will cause rust and corrosion to a cast iron pump leading to pump failure.

Q. "What is an open system?"
A. An open system is one in which fresh water is frequently added to the system. Domestic hot water circulation systems are a good example of an open system. When the hot side of a faucet is opened for use, cold water enters into the water heater. Stainless steel pumps should be used for open systems since they are not effected by the introduction of oxygen (air) into the system.

Q. "What is bus communication?"
A. A communication bus is a device made to transmit data from components in computers or processors to other components in the same computer or to other computers or processors. Bus communication occurs when data is transferred back and forth from one computer component to another.
