Bathroom Grey Water Recycling System
Save Thousands of Gallons Of Water Each Year!
Greywater recycling systemThe Sloan® AQUS Greywater System puts bathroom sink water to good use. This system filters the water that goes down your sink drain and then uses it to flush your toilet, saving thousands of gallons of water annually.

How Does The System Work? The system funnels water that flows down the lavatory sink and routes it through a sanitizing device that cleans and filters the water. The water then goes to a storage reservoir under the sink. When a toilet that is connected to the system flushes, it pumps water from the reservoir to the flush tank. The system significantly reduces the amount of clean, potable water needed for toilets by reusing greywater, which is perfectly suitable for flushing.
Can I Install This System In A Commercial Building? The AQUS greywater water system is ideal for hotels, schools, commercial buildings, government structures and multi-family residences that have restrooms with regular, tank-type toilets.
Is It Easy To Use/Install? The AQUS is tucked beneath the sink in your bathroom and has a holding tank that holds up to 5 1/2 gallons of water from the sink. Inside the toilet tank, the AQUS fill control unit keeps fresh water from filling the tank by holding the ballcock in the off position. That allows water held in the reservoir under the sink to fill the toilet tank. A water hose connects the reservoir to the fill control unit, using gravity, water pressure and a small electrical pump to move water from the vanity to the toilet. The AQUS comes with all parts needed and takes between one to two hours to install.
What About Filtering and Safety? A filter keeps hair and other solids from entering the toilet. Disinfection tablets control bacteria and other contaminants. These tablets are safe and will not damage your toilet components over time. AQUS does not hyper-chlorinate the toilet water. The chlorine tablets are held out of the water in a dispenser. When the user washes their hands or some other activity, then as the water goes down the bathroom sink, it rinses over the bottom tablet. This rinsing picks up enough chlorine to kill bacteria that might be in the water and brings the water back to where it was when it first came out of the faucet (approximately 1ppm). So, the water that is being used in the toilet is no different than is normally used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. "What is grey water?"
A. At its most basic definition, grey water (sometimes noted as graywater, gray water, or greywater) is the used water that goes down your home drains, with the exception of toilet water. This includes wastewater generated by laundry, dishwashing, hand washing, bathing and other washing. While this may be the dictionary definition of grey water, for the purposes of recycling grey water, some plumbing codes define grey water as only water discharged from lavatories, bathtubs, showers, clothes washers, and laundry trays and specifically exclude wastewater from kitchen sinks or dishwashers from their definition of grey water. Once water has been through a toilet, water closet, urinal, or in any way comes in contact with human waste, it is always considered sewage or black water. We recommend confirming with your local code authorities if you are unsure if your application works within code definition of grey water.

Q. "What is the energy consumption of the system?"
A. An energy meter was used to measure the energy consumption during operation, as well as the latent energy consumption during non-operation. Based upon the data collected, The AQUS system is expected to consume approximately seven (7) kilowatt hours of electricity annually. At an average cost per kilowatt hour of $0.07, the anticipated cost per year will be $0.50 per year.

Q. "What happens if there is too little water going down the bathroom sink?"
A. When the toilet is flushed, a 12 volt submersible pump inside the vanity tank is turned on. Any reused water in the vanity tank is pumped to the toilet to be used for flushing. When the vanity tank is empty, the normal fresh water valve is opened and the toilet fill cycle is completed with fresh water. The system always uses the vanity tank's reused water first then supplements it with fresh water.

Q. "When do I need to add new disinfectant tablets?"
A. The tablet dispenser holds three disinfectant tablets that, according to the manufacturer, under normal usage, should last about twelve months. The system should receive annual maintenance which includes replacement of disinfectant tablets and filter cleaning.

Q. "How long do the tablets last? How many flushes before the tablets need to be replaced?"
A. The tablets are designed to last about one year under normal conditions.

Q. "Where can I buy the replacement tablets?"
A. The 3 tablets (Clorox Automatic Toilet Bowl Cleaner) can be purchased at most grocery stores or hardware stores.

Q. "How easy are the tablets to replace?"
A. Unscrew the lid of the tablet dispenser, reload 3 tablets and reinstall lid. Along with rinsing the screen off, the annual maintenance takes approximately 15 minutes per year.

Q. "What are the tablets composed of?"
A. 33% active ingredient of Chlorine and Bromine.

Q. "Will long hair jam the pump in the reservoir tank?"
A. Typically long hair tends to tangle in the pop-up before entering the drain piping. The swirling motion of the water causes the hair to wrap around the stopper and any hair that passes through the pop-up must also pass the filter screen inside the reservoir tank before coming in contact with the pump.

Q. "Will the AQUS system work with any toilet?"
A. The AQUS water recycling system will work with most two-piece toilets that use a gravity pilot fill valve (like the Fluidmaster 400A). However, the system will not work with the following: dual flush toilets, one piece toilets, pressurized toilet, two-piece toilets that are not connected with two bolts, two-piece toilet tanks that are less than 15 1/2" in width, and two-piece toilet tanks that have a curved or rippled inside back.
